Overview & Goal

Every product launch relies heavily on timing. As an astrologer and data analyst, I wanted to explore whether objective patterns existed between debut timing (astrological seasonality) and real-world commercial traction across 120 top K-pop groups.

To test this hypothesis, I built a custom structured dataset from scratch to evaluate product launch success using dates, album sales, digital reach, and industry awards.

Data Collection & Preparation

Since this dataset didn’t exist anywhere online, I manually gathered, verified, and structured the data across multiple industry sources.

For commercial metrics, I extracted music show wins, physical sales, Perfect All-Kills (PAKs), and YouTube views from Kpopping and SoriData. two of the main reliable K-pop metric sources, then I ran the debut dates through Astro-Seek to calculate core placements like Sun, Moon, retrogrades, and lunar phases standardized to Seoul local time.

A key methodological challenge emerged around exact debut times. Older 1st and 2nd generation groups rarely documented their debut hour, making Ascendant calculations impossible. However, for 3rd generation and newer debuts, I retrieved precise release times directly from YouTube video metadata, as launching music videos simultaneously with digital albums is standard industry practice in South Korea.

To preserve analytical integrity, I categorized the dataset into “Reliable” (verified debut hour and minute) and “Unreliable” (date only) entries.

What I Found: Key Highlights

When analyzing the 120 groups, several clear patterns emerged across debut dates, performance metrics, and agency habits:

Sun vs. Moon Placements

While Sun signs were fairly distributed across the calendar, Moon sign calculations revealed a sharp contrast. Libra was the least common Sun sign for debuts, yet it turned out to be the single most frequent Moon sign across all groups.

Generational Shifts & Placements

Debut charts shifted noticeably over time: 2nd-generation groups favored Air signs (Gemini/Libra), 3rd-generation leaned heavily into Fire energy (Aries/Leo), and 4th-generation balanced Water and Fire. Among top-performing groups, mutable energy and Air dominance stood out, with Gemini and Virgo placements appearing most frequently in top award winners.

Moon Phases & Agency Habits

Groups debuting under Waxing moon phases (Gibbous and Crescent) consistently pulled higher physical album sales and award averages compared to First Quarter debuts. Additionally, major agencies showed distinct seasonal habits—SM favored Virgo debuts, YG leaned toward Leo, and JYP clustered around Aquarius.
